It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I write with sad news regarding the tragic passing of David Torn.
Dave was a much-loved member of the St Edward’s family. Dave is looked upon by colleagues, parents and members of the community as a dear friend. In a very short space of time, I too have grown to love and respect Dave. He had an infectious sense of humour that I know we will all miss every day.
I have been inundated with messages of support and tributes from our kind-hearted community, many from former students who were taught by Dave. All have remarked on how Dave made a difference to their education at St Edward’s and also their career choices thereafter. Many of Dave’s protégés were inspired by him to follow careers in teaching, history and politics.
One of his former students recalled one of Dave’s favourite sayings – ‘Good teachers light candles in dark places’ before saying that Dave ‘lit those candles everywhere’. This is something that I know that anyone who knew Dave would agree on.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Dave’s family at this very difficult time.
